Real Madrid’s Champions League playoff clash against Benfica descended into chaos after Vinicius Junior gave Los Blancos the lead in the first leg in Lisbon. The Brazilian winger fired in an unstoppable opener just five minutes into the second half, but his celebration sparked ugly scenes and a 10-minute delay ensued as the goalscorer accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racism. Chaos in Lisbon After he had whipped a brilliant finish beyond the goalkeeper, Benfica’s players and fans were angered by Vinicius’ protracted celebrations by the corner flag. He was confronted by the hosts’ Nicolas Otamendi while his team-mates became embroiled in separate shoving matches as they tried to protect him. Just when it seemed as though the flashpoint had died down as the two sides prepared to restart the game, Vinicius ran over to the referee to report something that Prestianni had said to him during an exchange of words, and the referee stopped the game altogether for the racism protocol.
